Cheat Sheet – Fabric Awnings

Glossary of key terms & concepts for custom fabric awning projects.
  • A-Frame Canopy: A canopy designed with two angled sides that meet at the top, forming an “A” shape, often used for entryways or standalone structures. The front face lends itself to the placement of graphics for strong branding.
  • Awning: An architectural projection attached to the exterior wall of a building, typically composed of canvas or acrylic cloth covering a frame structure. Awnings provide weather protection, identity, or decoration.
  • Closed Ends: Sides of awning are enclosed, offering more protection from the elements.
  • Concave Awning: An awning with an inward-curving surface, creating a scooped or hollowed appearance, often chosen for its aesthetic appeal.
  • Convex Awning: An awning with an outward-curving surface, creating a bulging, rounded appearance that maximizes shade and coverage. Also called a quarter round awning.
  • Dome Awning: A rounded, dome-shaped awning that provides a soft, curved profile and is often used for windows or entryways.
  • Elongated Dome: A stretched version of the dome awning, offering a more oval or oblong shape, ideal for larger windows or entrances.
  • Ends: Refers to the sides of an awning.
  • Fabric Enclosures: Protective coverings made of vinyl or canvas used to enclose spaces or provide additional shelter.
  • Drop Curtains: Fabric panels that can be lowered to enclose a space, providing protection from wind or sun.
  • Fabric Panels: Clear vinyl sections used to create walls or barriers, often used in conjunction with canopies or awnings to offer enclosure.
  • Frame: The structural component of an awning or canopy, often made from aluminum or steel.
  • Marquee Canopy: A large, fixed fabric canopy that typically extends over a walkway or entrance, often seen in theaters or hotels to provide a grand, sheltered entrance.
  • Open Ends: Sides of the awning are exposed, providing less structural coverage.
  • Powder Coat: A durable, protective coating applied to awning frames using a dry powder that is baked onto the metal surface, providing resistance to chipping, scratching, and fading.
  • Retractable: A shade structure that can be extended or retracted to provide adjustable protection from the sun and elements.
  • Scallops: Decorative cut patterns for the edges of a valance, adding aesthetic variety:
    • Greek Key: A geometric design resembling a continuous line shaped into repeated right angles.
    • Standard Scallop: A basic, curved pattern.
    • Straight Hem: A simple, straight edge without curves or patterns.
    • Wave: A soft, flowing curve resembling waves.
  • Spears: Spear-shaped poles used as attachments for Venetian style awnings.
  • Square Awning: An awning with a rectangular or square shape, typically featuring straight lines and right angles.
  • Stationary Canopy: A fixed architectural structure that provides permanent shelter or shade. Canopies are supported by the building to which they are attached and by one or more posts.
  • UV Protection: The ability of a material to block harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.
  • Valance: A decorative fabric edge that hangs from the bottom of an awning, available in various styles.
    • Loose Valance: Freely hanging and can move with the wind.
    • No Valance: An awning design without any hanging edge or skirt.
    • Rigid Valance: A fixed, firm edge that stays in place.
  • Venetian Awning: Traditional fabric awnings without enclosed sides. Often with spears.
